We are on our way to a union.

We are on our way to a union.

We are happy to let you know that we are one step closer to forming our union for Loyola University Chicago non-tenure-track faculty who teach at the Lake Shore Campus. We filed our petition to hold a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in order to win a voice at our university and improvements in our working conditions.

This is the first step in the legal process that will enable us to hold our union election, and as the Chicago Sun Times noted, join ” Faculty Forward [which] has swept up some 10,000 nontenure-track instructors at 33 colleges nationwide,” including Georgetown, Tufts, Northeastern, Washington University in St. Louis and others who have united in SEIU over the past 2 years.

We are proud to have so many members of the Loyola University Chicago community behind us. We have already received letter of support from theĀ Chicago City Council, and Senator Dick Durbin. UChicago students, parents, staff, tenured faculty, and alumni are also signing a petition in support of our efforts to improve working conditions for non-tenure-track faculty across the city.

With our union, we will have a strong, united voice to improve our jobs and our profession. As the process moves forward, we sincerely hope that there can be a collaborative relationship with the administration, based on mutual respect and an election process that is free from interference.
