We Proposed Fair Pay Increases & the Loyola Administration Responded With Rumors

 

The Loyola administration is spreading rumors that the NTT Faculty Union’s proposals for pay equity are extreme. At the same time, after 18 months of negotiating, the administration hasn’t made any proposals or counter-proposals related to pay for NTT faculty. So, we want to set the record straight.

What have we proposed?

  • After a 10-year pay freeze,
    • a pay increase for adjuncts to a minimum of $7,500 per course by the beginning of 2019. Loyola adjunct faculty are among the lowest paid in Chicago. 1
    • a pay increase for applied music faculty to a minimum of $70 per hour.
  • A pay increase that lifts English Language Learning Program faculty from the lowest paid to close to equal pay with CAS NTT faculty. 2
  • Guaranteed annual increases of at least 4% for all full-time NTT faculty in CAS, with additional increases for teaching additional courses and promotions in rank.
  • Additional increases based on longevity for everyone.

The administration has told department chairs that we made excessive compensation proposals, but that’s not true. We proposed living wages for our union members to make  progress toward pay equity with other faculty at Loyola. The administration is framing our proposals as a false choice for academic departments: either pay NTTs fairly and cut other academic expenses, or continue to pay poverty level wages to NTTs to avoid cuts to academic units.

The real problem is that the Loyola administration has their priorities wrong. Instead of investing in teaching, learning and scholarship or creating the conditions of just employment, they are proposing to  build another athletic facility after recently spending $1.4 million on additions to the basketball arena.

We hope to return to proposals for fair pay at our next negotiations:

  • December 15th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • December 18th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

1 Current pay for Loyola faculty is between $4000 and $4500/course.  The new course pay would be phased in over a two-year period.
2 This would include a 9-month appointment paid over 12 months with summer pay being additionally compensated at a per course rate.
