U. Senate Votes to Support Fair Contract for Union by End of this Semester

At the January 26th LUC University Senate meeting, several dozen NTT faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and Tenure Track allies showed up and spoke out on a proposal to encourage the administration to bargain in good faith and finalize a fair contract by the end of this Spring semester. Thanks to their passionate contributions, the resolution to support an expedient process toward a just contract for contingent faculty passed!

  • Senators Pamela Caughie (Professor, English) and Tisha Rajendra (Associate Professor, Theology) presented the proposal, which stated “…given that Loyola’s mission is committed to social justice and asks us to be persons for others, and to practice ‘values-based leadership’ that ensures ‘a consistent focus on personal integrity, ethical behavior in business and in all professions, and the appropriate balance between justice and fairness,’ the University Senate hereby urges the senior administration to bargain in good faith with the union toward the goal of a fair and just contract.”
  • Union Bargaining Committee co-chair Paige Warren shared her story of being an Adjunct Instructor who receives poverty wages without access to health insurance.  She called for Senate support of a union contract to right these unjust practices.
  • In her statement to the Senate, Acting Provost Margaret Callahan stated that the Loyola Administration was and is committed to bargaining in good faith and working toward a fair and just contract in a timely fashion. Those present countered that the Senate resolution asks the administration to follow through on that stated commitment.
  • Ultimately, the Senate – which includes NTT faculty representatives Terry Boyle and Diane Jokinen – voted in favor of the resolution. A substantial majority of the senators present voted in support of the resolution, with only three votes against and three abstentions.

In a powerful moment, the Loyola community came together to reinforce the Jesuit mission of the university by “[t]he University Senate hereby urges the senior administration to fulfill its stated commitment to bargain in good faith with the union toward the goal of a fair and just contract.” (View full resolution here). This victory is an encouraging step,  thanks to the efforts of the dozens of faculty and students who came to the Senate meeting and made this resolution pass. This demonstrates why it is important for all NTTs to participate in negotiations to make sure that we reach a fair contract this semester.
