We’ve Waited Too Long, The Time to Act Is Now

We made more progress in  negotiations on Friday, February 2nd as we agreed to contract articles on evaluations and faculty duties and responsibilities.  Also, for the first time, the Loyola administration made a modest proposal for a cancellation fee to be paid to adjunct faculty if a course assignment is canceled at the last minute.

As we go forward, the negotiations will turn on five key issues:

  • Greater job and income security for adjuncts instead of semester to semester appointments
  • A more reasonable workload for full-time NTT faculty
  • Increased adjunct pay and raising the lowest paid NTT Lecturers while ensuring a fair raise each year for every Unionized Faculty member
  • A clear path for promotions, including moving from adjunct to full-time
  • Improved benefits for adjuncts–such as support for professional development and winning benefit eligibility

These are not easy issues and it shouldn’t have taken almost two years to finally start talking seriously about them.  Our goal is to settle these issues by Easter, which will require more urgency at the bargaining table and more unity and action across the campus.

We call on all Unionized Faculty to do the following two things to drive the process forward:

  1. Come to negotiations on February 12th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again on February 14th (Valentine’s Day) from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Both meetings are in Room 114 Norville Athletic Center. RSVP Here
  2. Attend an important NTT faculty meeting on Tuesday, February 20th from 4pm-6pm , in Damen Multi-purpose room South, where we will vote on a plan to take action if we do not have a contract by Easter Sunday.
