ACTION REQUEST: Support the graduate student union at the 10/16 budget meeting!

Dear colleagues,

While, after a two-year struggle, we have negotiated our first contract, the graduate student union still does not have one. Indeed, the administration still refuses to even sit down and negotiate with them, something clearly inconsistent with their commitment to Catholic social teachings and social justice, both of which stress the importance of workers’ right to be represented through labor unions. In addition to being students, grad students are workers, the teaching assistants and teaching fellows who, like us, do much of the work to educate Loyola’s students.

On Tuesday, October 16 from 11:30-1:30 in Damen Student Center, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM Multipurpose Room (North), the administration will be holding a meeting on the University’s budget. The grad student union will have an organized presence there in order to press the administration to sit down and negotiate with them. They are asking us to come to the meeting and show our support for them. The grad student union consistently supported our efforts, showing up in high numbers at the University Senate meetings where our union’s efforts were discussed and joining us on the picket line when we went on strike. Now it’s our turn to show the same support for them.

Thank you,
Loyola Faculty Forward Solidarity Committee
